What they do
If the contract doesn't specify 'paint' or 'polish' for windows and doors, the contractor will default to normal enamel paint — even though most owners end up wanting a PU polish look. If you have a polished look in mind, the contractor will try to steer you away from it, because PU polish is much more expensive.
Real numbers
Real numbers, rates as on September 2026 (India-wide averages — confirm locally): take 11 windows of 8 ft × 5 ft (440 sqft) plus 5 standard doors of 7 ft × 3 ft (105 sqft) — 545 sqft in all. Ordinary enamel paint runs about ₹25-60/sqft, so roughly ₹13,600-₹32,700 for this area. Melamine polish runs about ₹80-130/sqft, roughly ₹43,600-₹70,850. PU (polyurethane) polish runs about ₹150-400/sqft, roughly ₹81,750-₹2,18,000. That's a ₹30,000 to over ₹1.8 lakh gap for the exact same windows and doors, decided purely by one word in the contract.
